Although many might say that gift card competitions have nothing to do really with helping other, and that people go to gaming platforms just to win online prizes, there are a few people like the ones behind the Vega Prizes project that will tend to disagree. They’ve took it upon themselves to prove to their players and the world that gaming companies can and should give back to the community and help the less fortunate. Having the possibility to help makes you responsible for the ones around you.
The Pros and Cons of Gift Card Competitions
Competitions with gift card prizes aren’t something new. They have been around for a while and they have a strong and ever-growing fan-base. These competitions emerged when the people responsible for developing gaming platforms were looking for something to substitute cash prizes with. Using gift cards as prizes proved to be the best solution since online gaming itself because it solved a lot of problems for both clients and site owners. But although the idea is quite good, not everybody likes it and some people find it hard to accept a gift card as a legitimate prize for a game. Some of the arguments in favor of gift cards are:
- They are cheaper than other prizes. The whole idea of gift card competitions is that people are awarded store credit to certain shops as opposed to actual money.
- Gift card competitions are available to a larger audience. The fact that the prizes are non-transferable gift cards, which also can’t be exchanged for money, these competitions can be appealing to both young and older people, without the risk of breaking any kind of gambling rules or laws.
- Gift card competitions can help people with gambling addictions get over them or at least keep them under control, while still letting them enjoy the experience of playing certain games.
- There are some big industry names offering gift cards as competition prizes. Among them Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Spotify.
Of course, there are also those who don’t see these gift card competitions as being a very good solution and have some strong arguments against them:
- Gift cards can only be used in the shops of the company that issued them, thus greatly reducing their versatility.
- Gift cards aren’t actually money so they don’t constitute an actual prize. Some argue that in lack of a real cash prize, the whole gaming experience is void.
- After being used, there might still be small amounts of credit left on gift cards, that are too small to be used, and are lost.
Although both sides have pretty strong arguments, these competitions are here to stay. More and more platforms are getting into the Giftcardmall game and are developing new and exciting new games that can be played by anyone looking to get their hands on a gift card. Even if you can only buy a couple of cups of coffee with them, gift cards are proving to be a lasting trend that will soon be even more present than it is today.
